Biography
This vessel was the first ship to circumnavigate* the globe, the greatest maritime exploit, which she achieved between 1519 and 1522. It was the first time in history that a ship sailed successfully around the world, having left and returned to the port of Seville under the command of Juan Sebastián Elcano.
In 1991, a lengthy research project was launched in Spain to establish the ship’s shape and characteristics, directed by her designer and builder Ignacio Fernández Vial. An exhaustive study was carried out based on 16th-century maritime treaties, documentary sources, chronicles and contemporary iconography to determine her principle dimensions, rigging, sails and equipment.
In 2004, the replica set sail from Seville to complete another tour of the world in commemoration of the first journey and to promote the exploration work of Spanish sailors. Between 2004 and 2006, she travelled 26,894 miles and visited 17 countries, becoming the first historic replica to circumnavigate* the globe.
*Circumnavigate: To travel by sea around a continent or the Earth
