Biography

The Sant Maria Manuela is a four-masted schooner built in 1937 by Companhia União Fabril in Lisbon. She has a steel hull – an important characteristic at the time – and was designed to sail in difficult and icy waters. She was built for cod fishing and crossed the Atlantic from Portugal to the Grand Banks of Canada every year.
In 1993, the ship was pronounced obsolete and was dismantled. Only her hull remained intact. Between 2007 and 2010, she was rebuilt by the Pascoal group of fishermen and was later bought by Recheio Cash & Carry, part of the Jeronimo Martins group.
